The newest member of the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office is set to graduate from his own type of police academy next week. Tuscarawas County Sheriff Deputy Jim Martin and his new partner, Brix, a German shepherd, are in the last week of a 15-week training program with the Canton City Police Department. The Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office purchased Brix earlier this year to further aid in the fight against drugs in the county. Brix and Deputy Martin began their training in February and K9 Trainer, Canton Police Officer Gary Haft says it is a very rigorous program. But, Deputy Martin says he and Brix are actually having fun, even though the program is long and hard. Haft praised Deputy Martin and Brix for the accomplishments they both have made during training and says Brix will be a definite asset to County Law Enforcement. Tuscarawas County Sheriff Walt Wilson says they purchased the dog with money from donations and grants and says that Canton Police offered the training at no charge. Wilson says the department is hoping to purchase another dog by the end of the year.
