More Poultry Houses Coming to Accomack County - Click here to print this information

At Wednesday night's Accomack County Board of Supervisors' meeting County Administrator Dr. Steve Miner referred the supervisors to a report from the Planning Department that outlines the rapid growth and new applications for poultry houses. Miner said that he thinks the supervisors are going to see more complaints than in previous years about the number and locations of the already approved or pending applications for a total of 75 new chicken houses. The report says there will be 6 to 12 houses created with each application and the houses are larger than in the past.

21 new houses were built in Accomack County in 2014 and six have been approved in 2015 with 69 more pending. Somerset County Maryland has 67-70 new houses pending, Kent County Delaware added 50 houses last year.

Purdue and Valley Protein along with Tysons employ 3,150 people. Purdue and Valley Protein employs 1450 people in Accomack County.
Accomack County is ranked number two in the state of Virginia for chicken broiler production.

Miner reported that a typical new poultry house generates approximately $1000 in real estate taxes and are taxed using farm equipment methodology.

According to the report Tysons reported to the Accomack County staff that they hope to have 50 to 100 new houses built throughout Accomack County in 2015, and that they are looking into places to locate in Northampton County.

Miner asked the supervisors to review the report and that he would put the subject on an upcoming agenda to determine if they feel any action is necessary.
