A Portage County jury has found a 33-year-old man guilty of in the death of his 77-year-old stepfather. The jury deliberated for more than five hours Thursday.
Andrew Pray is scheduled to be sentenced June 9 for the death of Christopher Bonnstetter. Investigators said Bonnstetter died after he was beaten with a baseball bat by Pray in May 2014.
On May 26, the Plover Police Department responded to a home on the 2800 block of Cedar Drive in Plover around 2 p.m. for the report of an assault. Inside they say they found Bonnstetter, critically injured. When officers arrived on scene they found a neighbor and the suspect, Pray, standing in a garage. According to court documents, Pray responded no comment when asked by an officer what happened.
Pray was arrested at the scene.
Bonnstetter was removed from life support on June 3 after he was determined to be brain dead.
The victim's wife, and Pray's mother, told police she was watching television and Bonnstetter was laying on the floor in the living room resting when Pray came up from downstairs and began hitting Bonnstetter with a baseball bat. She told police she believed Bonnstetter was struck three or four times.
The woman told police she attempted to call 911, but her phone would not work, so she ran to the neighbors. The woman told police Andy [Andrew Pray] just flipped out.
Investigators never identified a motive.
Pray faces a mandatory life sentence. Only his parole eligibility would be discussed at a sentencing hearing.
