One of Algonas most famous residents has died. According to a family friend, Dick Dale passed away Friday morning at the age of 88. Dale appeared on the Lawrence Welk Show from 1951 to 1982, singing and performing the saxophone with the Lawrence Welk Champaign Orchestra. He was known for his baritone voice and often appeared in duets with the shows female stars.

Dick graduated from Algona High School in 1943 and served in the US Navy. He performed with several Midwest bands, including Harold Loeffelmacher and his Six Fat Dutchmen Old-Time Band. He was part of the Six Fat Dutchmen when Welk discovered him and persuaded Dale to join his band. After living all across the country, Dick moved back to Kossuth County in 2006 with his wife Marguerite.

Dick Dale is survived by his wife and four children. Oakcrest Funeral Services in Algona is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
