South Dakota has fallen to 30th place in the 2007 KIDS COUNT report that ranks states on their ability to address the wellbeing of children. Carole Cochran with the South Dakota KIDS COUNT Project says this is a significant drop from the state's 14th place ranking last year, with one being the best and 50th the worst. She says the biggest change was infant mortality, which increased by 50 percent, but there was other bad news.

South Dakota had 39 child deaths per 100-thousand; the national average is 11. Cochran says the bright spot is that the state is trying to address the issues.

Car accidents are blamed for the rise in teen deaths, currently 80 per 100-thousand young adults, compared to the national average of 40 deaths per 100-thousand teens. The annual South Dakota KIDS COUNT data book uses ten indicators to monitor the well-being of children; it's published by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
