The Board of Education for Decatur County Community Schools met Wednesday afternoon. The board approved the North Decatur High School Spring Break Trip to France, Switzerland, and Germany from March 14-26, 2019. The board accepted resignations effective at the end of the 2017-18 school year from Jessica Sell from South Decatur Elementary School and Catherine Schmeltz from North Decatur Elementary School. The board approved medical leave for Heidi Beagle from South Decatur Elementary School from August 3 - November 26, 2018.

The board approved the following hirings effective at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year: Krista Evans as the Occupational Specialist for the District; Devin Clark as an English teacher at South Decatur High School; Emma Shaver as a Preschool teacher at South Decatur Elementary School; Ashleigh Shouse as a Special Education teacher at South Decatur High School; and Allison Wilkerson for 30 hours per week for the Duke Summer Literacy Grant replacing Christy Nesbit. The board approved the hiring of Cassie Martindale as the Junior High Volleyball Coach at North Decatur High School and the termination of Donnie Barber as the Assistant Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at South Decatur High School.

The board approved the Junior and Senior High School Athletic Eligibility Policy. The new policy comes directly from the IHSAA athletic policy. The policy determines athletic eligibility by grading period and requires a student to pass at least 70 percent of full credit subjects. In the case of Decatur County Community Schools, students would have to pass 5 of 7 classes to remain eligible. A significant change is that a student that fails to meet the requirement at the end of the 9 week grading period would be ineligible for the entire next 9 week grading period. In addition, a student that does not meet the standards at the end of the school year would be ineligible for the first 9 weeks of the next school year.

The board approved the budget calendar. The board will review and give permission to advertise during the regular board meeting on August 8th. The budget will be advertised in local newspapers on August 10th and 11th. The board will hold a public hearing during a special meeting on August 22nd and budget adoption will take place during the regular meeting on September 12th.

The board approved the Biology II textbook. The school district has not offered Biology II in 4-5 years but will with the start of the 2018-19 school year. It was pointed out that Biology II is an extra step prior to students enrolling in advanced placement courses and should help students improve AP scores. The district will consider expanding into several other areas of study in upcoming years.

Superintendent Dr. Jarrod Burns briefed the board on the Marzano High Reliability Schools Summit attended by district and school administrators in early July. He noted that the district has received the school safety grant that assists as the matching portion of School Resource Officer salaries. He noted that there is currently one open teaching position at both North Decatur and South Decatur Elementary Schools.

The board will hold its next meeting on August 8th at 6:00 pm at the Decatur County Community Schools Central Office.
