The Westport Town Council met Monday evening. The Marshal's report for June included 7 arrests, 7 citations, and 30 verbal warnings. The department also provided the following assists: 6 to the Decatur County Sheriff's Department, 1 to the Indiana State Police, 4 to Child Protective Services, 1 to the Greensburg Police Department, 2 to Animal Control, and 2 to the Jennings County Sheriff's Department. The Department had 42 reserve officer hours during June.
Joyce Brindley provided the Mainstreet Westport report. There will be a community yard sale at the park on Saturday, July 21st. The Outreach Center has agreed to take all left over items. Electronics recycling will take place on Saturday, October 20th from 9:00-11:00 am in the Town Hall Parking Lot. New trash containers for Main Street should be in place by the end of July.
The council approved Ordinance 2018-4 to vacate the cul-de-sac at the end of Lincoln Street between lots 10 and 11. The adjoining property owners will take over responsibility for the property taxes. The council also approved an amendment to the salary ordinance. With the retirement of Dale Herbert, the town has a vacant position. The amendment would hire a full-time employee at $18.50 per hour for a total of $37,000 per year. The employee would fill a float position with duties in the street, cemetery, water, and sewer departments.
A resident requested that the town consider that the next improvement project include removing old trees on Main Street and replacing sidewalks. The resident also suggested creating parallel parking spaces on one side of Main Street. The council was asked to consider starting the process to condemn the old beauty shop on Mulberry Street. The council will consider moving the street department to the property on West Street that already has garage bays but would need a new roof.
The council will hold its next meeting on August 13th at 7:00 pm at the Westport Town Hall.
