Another way Decatur County United Fund invests in the community is through special grants to meet specific needs and fuel special projects. United Fund awarded $34,784 in special grants to 16 of our current community partners at its June Board of Directors meeting.
The 2018 special grants were awarded due to the success of the 2017 Campaign. The grants provide funding for short-term projects or one-time expenses that will have a positive impact in the community.
The amount of this years grants shows the benefit of giving to the Decatur County United Fund, but also how much more we can do with additional dollars from the campaign. United Fund Executive Director, Joane Cunningham, shared. Each agency was eligible to receive up to $2,500. These dollars are very beneficial to the many non-profits that applied for the special grant. Budget cuts and other reductions in funding are a constant struggle for many partners.
The 2018 Special Grant recipients are:
Advocates for Children $2,000 for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for enrichments activities for the children being served in the program;
Big Brothers/Big Sisters $2,500 to upgrade and purchase the Data Entry Match Management Systems; Bread of Life $2,500 for 6 months of electric usage; Carousel Play and Learn Center for $1,100 for STEM Kits for classrooms; Community Healthcare Clinic $2,500 to meet prescription needs and initial specialists appointments; Decatur County Youth Baseball $2,466 for replacement of baseballs, helmets, and other equipment; Head Start $2,000 to improve outdoor space for children; Human Services received $2,500 to purchase food for the food pantry; Kids Closet of Decatur County $2,000 for purchase of new clothes and shoes for back to school children; Legal Aid $2,500 to purchase new copier/printer; New Directions $2,425 for rent for five months; Our Hospice $2,500 to purchase medical equipment and supplies; Rural Works Program $957 for signage for the program at the Greensburg Learning Center; Turning Point $1836 for furniture to update the family communal living area; United Way 2-1-1 $2,500 for 3 laptops to be used offsite and during a disaster; Decatur County Family YMCA $2,500 for training hours for staff to meet Paths to Quality requirements.
