INDIANAPOLIS -- Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a new law that mandates that a sex offender cannot live within a one-mile radius of the residence of their victim, regardless of their age.
This law, previously only applied to sex offenders whose victims were minors.
"Victims of sexual assault have suffered through very, painful, life-altering experiences," sponsor of the legislation, State Rep. Sharon Negele said. "After all they have been through, they should never have to regularly face their attackers in the space where they are supposed to feel safe. By extending this protection to all victims, we can help spare them from encounters with their attackers and give them the feeling of security they need to continue their healing process."
Sex offenders are also prohibited from going to a house of worship located on school property while extracurricular activities, classes, or other school activities are being held.
The new law will go into effect on July 1.
