During her six years of service to the Decatur County United Fund Board, they were awarded and implemented a disaster grant, the 1010 Matching Grant to implement several literacy initiatives, and the INvest 1213 Grant for many STEM initiatives in science, technology, engineering and math. Sarah was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 2012 for her outstanding contributions to the United Fund and our community.
In 2013, the Decatur County United Fund campaign theme was Rooted In Decatur County: Lets Tend to our Roots. Sarah and her husband, Paul, graciously donated a tree from a fund they established in the Community Foundation and it was planted at Rebekah Park in Greensburg in honor of our United Fund campaign. It is still there today and will be rooted in our community for many years to come.
Sarah went on to serve on the Indiana United Ways state-level board from 2009 to 2018. She chaired the Board, Nominating Committee and the State Leaders Conference Committees, and served on the executive, grants, membership, leadership and the executive search committee. She chaired the board in 2016 during the its most comprehensive strategic planning process ever. Sarah led the board through vetting data and imagining a different United Way to forge a stronger future. In these roles she supported significant change while continually being the voice of local United Funds and smaller communities becoming a top champion for IUWs ambitious Vision 2027 strategic plan. Sarah is an honest, devoted and compassionate leader, and embodies the true spirit of the Castaldi Award.
More on the Castaldi Award
Lawrence Castaldi led Indiana United Ways association for its first three years and served on its board until his death in 1985. Upon his retirement as board chairman in 1980, the Association presented him with its first award, recognizing the invaluable contribution he made to the United Way/Fund movement in Indiana. They named the award in his honor as a lasting tribute to his undaunting spirit of voluntarism, the same spirit that the Association salutes today through the Castaldi Award. The purpose of the Castaldi Award is to provide continuity of the Castaldi Tradition by recognizing the exemplary contribution of a Hoosier to advancing the United Way movement. The contribution should reflect the personal, passionate, persevering spirit exhibited by its namesake. The honoree invests in innovative work that takes the United Way/Fund to new levels of success or community involvement.
