May is National Foster Care Month, which recognizes parents, volunteers, child welfare professionals and other community members who help children in the foster care system.
Foster care plays an instrumental role in our country, as it temporarily provides a safe, stable environment for children who can no longer live in their own homes.
In Indiana alone, more than 40,000 children were in foster care between December 2016 and December 2017, according to the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS), and an estimated 430,000 kids and teens are in the foster care system nationwide.
I encourage Indiana residents to consider getting involved in the foster care system - all children deserve a safe and stable place to live.
Prior to becoming a foster parent, one must complete all required training, pass home visits by a licensing specialist, provide positive personal reference statements, and pass a criminal history and background check.
Once a child is placed in a foster parents care, reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses are made on a per-diem basis. Rates vary according to the needs of the child and the agency that holds the license.
To find out how to get involved in the foster care system, Senate District 42 residents can contact the following DCS office in their community.
