The Board of Education for Decatur County Community Schools met Wednesday evening. The board approved conference attendance for Jacob Crossley from North Decatur Junior-Senior High School at the Midwest Band Directors Clinic in Chicago on December 20th. The board approved the resignation of Jacob Mauer and medical leave for Kara Brown. Three hirings were approved for North Decatur Junior-Senior High School: Alexis Niese as an Educational Assistant, Karen Ryle for the cafeteria, and Samantha Krieger as a volunteer girls varsity basketball assistant. The board approved hiring Anthony Jarvis as a volunteer baseball coach for South Decatur Junior-Senior High School. Dave Sell and Fred Chase received extra effort awards.

The board approved updates to NEOLA policies. The replacement policy technology update states that "in order to avoid disruption of the educational environment and protect students rights of privacy, student use of personal communication devices is prohibited on school grounds during school hours." It includes an option that states "students may use the following technology resources and other electronic equipment/devices on school property only for educational or instructional purpose like taking notes, recording a class lecture, and writing papers with the teacher's permission and supervision." In those instances, the following devices are approved: cameras, laptops, tablets, smart phones, e-readers, personal digital assistants, and portable CD/MP3 players (without headphones).

The board accepted a $500 donation from the Westport Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge 681 for the South Decatur Elementary School clinic.

The board approved a snow removal bid from Globe Asphalt Paving at an hourly rate of $82.50. The bid established the per push price per building for 2.5 inches of snow or less as follows: SDHS-$500, SDES-$350, NDHS-$650, NDES-$375, and Central Office-$150.

Superintendent Dr. Jarrod Burns updated the board on his visits to C4 classes at each high school. He emphasized the opportunities provided to students and possibilities for expansion in the future.

Curriculum Director Debbie Reynolds discussed the use of technology rather than using textbooks. The district continues to evaluate ways to make better use of technology, in particular iPads and Chromebooks, to improve the learning environment.

North Decatur Elementary School Principal Rob Smith and North Decatur Junior-Senior High School Principal Charlie McCoy provided updates on their schools. Mr. McCoy noted the schools Fellowship of Christian Athletes set a goal of filling 50 Christmas boxes but, through their hard work, filled 100 boxes. North Decatur High School will have their annual Veterans Day convocation on November 10th. There will be a Veterans breakfast at 8:30 am with the convocation starting at 10:00 am.

The board will hold its next meeting on December 13th at 6:00 pm at the Decatur County Community Schools Central Office.
