6/13/2017 - Westport Town Council Meeting - Click here to print this information

The Westport Town Council met Monday evening. The contracts have been signed for the LED street light project and work should begin in late July. The project applies to every street light in town and will provide 2 new street lights. The town is working on obtaining state grants to assist in street paving. The state recently changed the matching funds formula from a 50/50 split to 25/75. The town currently has about $33,000 in its fund with a goal of $50,000. The town could then obtain $150,000 from the state. The total funding would result in approximately 2 miles of paving. The state will decide which projects to approve based on recommendations from the town council. The council passed a modification of the salary ordinance to allow for a part-time employee that would be utilized in multiple town departments. The position would pay no more than $13.00 per hour and would work less than 40 hours per week. The position is designed to assist while a town employee is out for medical reasons through at least the end of September. The council is still exploring the process to hire an officer to work up to 4 night shifts per week. The Farmers Market will start June 27th and will take place each Tuesday from 3:00-7:00 pm at the park gazebo. The Fall Festival is scheduled for October 14th. Joyce Brindley is leading the project to obtain grants from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs for a sidewalk project. The council conducted the first reading for Ordinance 2017-6 to set new fees for water and sewer. The reconnect fee is $30, increasing to $60 after hours. Water and sewer deposits will each be $100. The sewer deposit is a new fee. The second reading of the proposed ordinance will take place at the July 10th meeting. Decatur County Area Plan and Zoning Director Krista Duvall presented the council with the newly approved County Comprehensive Plan. The council passed a resolution accepting the plan. The council will hold its next meeting on Monday, July 10th at 7:00 pm at the Westport Town Hall.
