The Westport Town Council held its monthly meeting Monday evening in front of a packed town hall. The council approved a request from the Westport Building Association to use the covered bridge for the Covered Bridge Festival on June 3rd. Anyone wanting to rent the community building can now call 812-614-5534. The town of Westport will hold an electronics recycling day on April 5th. The marshals report showed 2 arrests, 9 citations, 5 written warnings, and 35 verbal warnings in February. The council held discussion about switching to LED streetlights. The town currently pays Duke Energy $1125 per month. Duke Energy could switch the town to all LED lights for an initial cost of $57,346, or about $300 a month above the current bill. After 5 years, the new equipment would be paid off and the monthly rate would drop from $1125 to $276 per month. The council approved contacting MainSource Bank to look at other financing options, before any further discussions. The council has selected three engineering firms to interview for the town water project. After lengthy and somewhat heated discussion, the council set a threshold of $500 on overdue sewer fees before placing a lien on property. The council approved an expansion of the Deer Run subdivision. The next meeting will take place on April 10th at 7:00 pm at Westport Town Hall.
