2/28/2018 - Old Gang Assault Charges Dropped: New Murder Charges - Click here to print this information

(Annapolis,MD) WNAV - Anne Arundel County police say new charges are filed in connection with the gang-related murder of Annapolis resident, 22-year-old Jose Hernandez-Portillo.

A tip last August led police to a shallow grave in a wooded area of Quiet Waters Park. Police recovered his remains. Portillo had been reported missing since March 2016.

Earlier this week prosecutors dropped assault charges against 19-year-old Juan Carlos Sandoval-Rodrigues. He had been arrested in connection with an assault reported by an Annapolis High School student.

The 15-year-old student told the principal he was beat up near school grounds last March because he would not join the MS-13 gang.

Detectives say evidence has led them to Sandoval-Rodriguez as one of the suspects in the death of Hernandez-Portillo.

Police say he helped lure Portillo to the park, participated in the murder and helped to bury the body.

The first man arrested in the case was 20-year-old David Diaz Alvarado of Annapolis. Alvarado is charged with murder and is held without bond.
