BALTIMORE (AP) -
A man who killed one Baltimore police officer and tried to kill another 12 officers in 1976 has struck a plea deal that could see him released from prison in about 15 years.
John Earl Williams has already served more than four decades in prison. He was given a life sentence, but that was thrown out last year.
On Monday, he pleaded guilty to murder and 11 counts of assault and received a new sentence that amounts to 85 years. The Baltimore Sun reports that his attorney estimates he will serve about 60 years before being released for good behavior.
Williams unleashed a barrage of gunfire from the top floors of a rowhouse. The rampage ended with Officer Jimmy Halcomb dead and two others disabled.
