SALISBURY, Md. (AP) - County leaders on the Eastern Shore are weighing the future of a Confederate marker on a historic courthouse lawn and hearing from residents on both sides of the issue.

TV station WMDT reports speakers at a Tuesday night meeting of the Wicomico County Council made their cases for either keeping or removing a marker honoring Confederate Gen. John Henry Winder.

County Executive Bob Culver says the council is waiting to discuss the issue with the state of Maryland and move forward from there.

Communities across the country are debating what to do with Confederate monuments and other symbols after a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that descended into violence.
