PERRYVILLE, Md. (AP) -
A strike has been averted after IKEA and workers at a distribution center in Maryland agreed to extend contract talks.
The Baltimore Sun reported Friday that the workers' union had rejected IKEA's latest proposal and approved a strike that would have begun at midnight.
But the union also asked the company to resume negotiations. IKEA agreed. The extension is for two weeks.
More than 500 workers are based at the facility in Perryville. It sends furniture products to 39 IKEA stores.
George Bull Miller, president of the Local I-460 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, said negotiations centered on a $1-an-hour pay increase and holiday leave. Workers now earn between $13.65 and $20 an hour.
The Swedish company said it will continue working toward an agreement.
