The borough of Mars has a new mayor.
Terry Onufer, who has been a resident of the borough since 1991, was appointed by council last night to fill the unexpired term of Dick Settlemire, who died last month.
"I look to learn and gather knowledge and further the efforts of the council and the work they have done over the past several years," said Onufer. "I look forward to serving the residents of Mars."
Onufer, 54, works as a distribution manager for the tubular group and logistics division of U.S. Steel Corporation.
The native of Pittsburgh's East Side is married and has three grown children, one daughter and two sons, both of whom wrestled for Mars Area High School.
Onufer will have the option to run in a special election next year to keep the seat, or fill Settlemire's term until its expiration at the end of next year.
But it looks like Onufer has his sights set on running for the office.
So does his wife.
"We're excited," said Lynne Onufer with a laugh.
Onufer says he knows replacing Settlemire will not be an easy task.
"I understand I have big shoes to fill," he said. "I knew Dick fairly well, as most people did."
