MORGANTON (WKVS) Burke County Sheriff's deputy Martin Lawing received a
national award in Florida yesterday. The National Sheriff's Association recognized Burke County Sheriff's Deputy Martin Lawing as the deputy sheriff of the year. Martin Lawing was shot in the neck in December of 2007 during a stand off with a mentally unstable woman. He was paralyzed from the waist down after the shooting. Last year he returned to work at the sheriff's office and is now working there full-time.
