According to Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police, the investigation into the fire at Adams United Methodist Church on Leemont Rd. revealed that arson is not suspected as a cause of the fire.

Fire broke out at Adams United Methodist Church at approximately 8:45 Wednesday morning.

Several fire companies responded including Parksley, Tasley, Onley, Onancock and Bloxom and Atlantic. The fire quickly consumed the roof of the structure. At 9:50 it was reported that there was a roof collapse at the church.

Firefighters arrived at the church to find smoke pouring out of the roof of the structure. The fire apparently had been smoldering for a long period of time and was mainly in the attic area of the main sanctuary.

Some of the firefighters involved said there was no outward evidence that the building had been entered and all doors were secure.

The Adams United Methodist Church has been a very active church on the Eastern Shore. The Rev. Carl Perez is the pastor. The church has been in existence for over 135 years.

Church members plan to hold a community prayer vigil at Grace United Methodist Church in Parksley starting at 5 p.m.
