Bruce Jones Submits Resignation letter - Click here to print this information

Long time Northampton County Commonwealth's Attorney Bruce Jones has announced he will resign, effective December 31 of this year. Jones states he is resigning 'for personal reasons including but not limited to health considerations'. He will also step down as Northampton County's Attorney.

The letter states that Virginia law provides that the 'highest ranking full-time assistant' will take over until a special election can be held. Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Beverly Leatherbury will take over until such an election takes place. Leatherbury has been the Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for 12 years.

Jones has held the office for almost 26 years and survived a surprise challenge to the seat from Garret Dunham in the last election.

He closed his letter stating "That the citizens of Northampton County have entrusted me for so many years with the considerable responsibilities and authority associated with the office of the Commonwealth's Attorney has been a very high honor as is the fact that the Northampton County Board of Supervisors has chosen for such a long time to rely on me for advice counsel and representation."
