According to Sheriff Todd Godwin, on July 27, 2017 at approximately 10:30 AM, the Accomack County Sheriffs Office received a report of child abuse/neglect on Gladding Rd. in Mears, VA.

During the investigation into this incident a search warrant was obtained on July 27, 2017. Prior to the execution of the search warrant five children were removed from the home by the Accomack County Department of Social Services. One dog that was showing signs of neglect was removed from the home during the execution of the search warrant.

On July 28, 2017 Malista Ness-Hopkins, aged 38 of Mears, VA was arrested and charged with (5) counts of Felony Abuse and Neglect of Children .Malista Ness-Hopkins was incarcerated in the Accomack County Jail with bond denied; subsequently, Ms. Ness has been released on a 10,000 unsecured bond.

The Accomack County Sheriffs Office was assisted by the Accomack County Department of Social Services.
