3/20/2017 - CBBT Project to Use Specially Designed Boring Machine - Click here to print this information

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is scheduled to begin preparation for the installation of a new tunnel under the Thimble Shoals Channel in the fall of this year. According to an article in Sundays Virginian Pilot, Bridge Tunnel CEO Jeff Holland told the CBBT Board of Directors this week that the actual boring will begin in 2018. Holland said that a new giant boring machine is being built especially for this project and will not be able to start to install the new tunnel until 2018.

It is the first time a boring machine of this type has been used in this region. The process uses a 41 foot rotating head that can cut into the soil under the bottom of the bay, carve it our and haul it away on a conveyor belt before it is transferred to trucks. Precast concrete tunnel segments are loaded into the machine and pushed into place. The entire project is expected to take about five years.
