12/29/2017 - Fatal Accident Claims Life on SR-89 - Click here to print this information

On Wednesday morning, at approximately 8:50 a.m., 66-year-old Jack Handy of Taylorsville was driving his pickup truck southbound on SR-89, south of Dixie Canyon Road, exiting a slight left curve in the roadway at an unknown rate of speed.

For reasons unknown, Mr. Handy allowed the vehicle to drift off the paved roadway, across the asphalt turnout, and onto a dirt/gravel road leading to an elevated dirt turnout.

The vehicle continued in the gravel road and then drove onto the east face of a small dirt/grass embankment adjacent to the elevated dirt turnout, where its left, front collided with a small pine tree.

After colliding with the tree, the vehicle continued down the embankment, across the road entrance, and to the elevated dirt turnout before colliding with a large boulder at the base of the large dirt embankment that borders the west shoulder of SR-89.

The impact with the rock caused the vehicle to overturn onto its side as it landed on the shoulder of the roadway.

Mr. Handy was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision and, sadly, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
