9/5/2009 - Brady Cooking Teams Dominate 36th Goat Cook-Off -
Held at Richards Park in Brady, the 2009 event included 175 cooking teams all hoping to have their offering selected as the winner of the Championship honors.
Almost 100 of those cooking also signed up to compete in the Mystery Meat competition. This year, the mystery meat was quail.
When the judges' decisions were announced Saturday afternoon, eight of the top 10 teams were from the Brady area. Plus, the winner of the Super Bowl category was also a Brady-based team.
The winner of the 36th Annual World Championship Goat Cook-Off was D&D Family & Friends from Brady. Second place went to TBC Town Door from Marlin. Third place to Goat Gamblers from Brady. Fourth to the A.A.W. team from San Antonio. Then, the remaining places from fifth through tenth all went to Brady-area teams -- Heart of Texas Ford, Carmeuse Industrial Sand, Carnivorous Habits, 3B & Company, Goatibillies, and Moreno Team.
The winner of the Superbowl category went to 3B & Company which is comprised of members of the Bradshaw family from Brady.
The winner of the Mystery Meat competition was 3 Old Goats & A Kid from Justin.
Other winners of the day included Kiss My Cabrito who won the Showmanship, while Angel Food won the Best Rig category.
The Arts & Craft award went to Simpson Walking Canes. The washer pitching winner on both Friday and Saturday was Bradley Grady and Robert Orgega. The horsehoes winner was Terry Day and Bill Smith.
Cook-Off activities began Friday night with washer pitching, cooker registration and Welcome Party and free Welcome Dance sponsored by KNEL and Lubke's GM Cars & Trucks.
Saturday morning got underway with the the Goat Gallop which boasted a record number of participants in 2009 -- over 150 runners and walkers made their way over the 5K course. Runners with the best times in the Goat Gallop were Troy Clifton and Callie Young.
The Arts and Crafts fair filled the park with a variety of food, gifts, jewelry, toys and collectibles. The Colgate Country Showdown began at 10am with KNEL broadcasting live as 15 entries competed hoping this would be their ticket to making their way to the finals in Nashville.
From 11am-2pm, it was a mouth watering BBQ Goat lunch. Then, Goat Cook-Off judging began in the early afternoon starting with "Mystery Meat"
Goat Cook-Off festivties wrapped up with a street dance at the G. Rollie White Pavilion featuring Brian Milson & The Short Road Band, Seth James and Wade Bowen.
